This site is dedicated to the memory of Mickey Flacks, a lifelong champion of social justice, women’s rights, peace, community planning and affordable housing.

She is survived by her husband Dick, her brother Hershl Hartman, her sons Chuck and Marc, and six grandchildren: Maurice, Olivia, Allison, Marlena, David, and Samuel.

This is a participatory site. We want you to browse the words, photos and videos, but we also want you to contribute words, photos and videos on each of the pages. Mickey touched the lives of thousands, and certainly hundreds have personal memories and reflections about Mickey that we would all love to share with you.

Also, we invite you to contribute to two funds set up in Mickey’s honor: The SBCAN Journalism Fund (in partnership with the Santa Barbara Independent) and the Mickey Flacks Social Housing Fund at the Fund for Santa Barbara. We are confident that she would have wanted her legacy to be to continue the work — so please help Mickey’s works continue to live on and grow.

The Mickey Flacks Social Housing Fund was created to honor the life and legacy of community activist and friend of the FUND, Mickey Flacks. During her 50 years in Santa Barbara, Mickey devoted herself to the advancement of social justice and democracy. She understood access to affordable housing and tenants rights as critical to making her beloved community more livable. She strived to create a model for social housing—housing developed for people’s needs rather than for the market. In this spirit, the Fund for Santa Barbara is proud to carry on Mickey’s commitment to housing equity by way of the Mickey Flacks Social Housing Fund.
